Helderberg Kiwanians are now vexillophiles
To the Editor:
Many folks know Dr. Stuart Fass as the local dentist whose office is in Altamont. Members of Kiwanis Club of the Helderbergs learned this week that he is also a vexillologist.
He studies flags; their history, symbolism, evolution and more. He gave us a presentation that traced the evolution of our American flag, showing us examples of the many precursor flags that contributed to the symbolism and design of the flag we fly today.
Thanks to Dr. Fass, we now have a greater understanding and appreciation of our flag and its meaning, and we can more appropriately call ourselves vexillophiles, or general admirers of flags.
Members also recognized Homer Warner’s 50 years of service to the club and presented him with a Legion of Honor award.
Please reach out to club president Frank Dees at 217-320-9002 if you would like to know more about joining Kiwanis.
