To the Editor:

The Voorheesville/Town of New Scotland Volunteer Day on Saturday, May 18, was a wonderful success!

With the help of 50 enthusiastic volunteers, we helped 13 senior households in our community with yard work and small projects, planted flowers at the Feura Bush Senior Apartments, and assisted with grounds work at Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

The annual spring event is sponsored by the town of New Scotland, the New Scotland Kiwanis, and the Clayton A. Bouton High School Key Club.

A big thank-you to our hard-working volunteers! A special thank-you to Key Club president and high school junior Michaela Michels for recruiting 16 hardworking student volunteers, many of whom assisted with multiple projects.

Thank you to Supervisor Doug LaGrange, the town board, and the town highway department for providing needed facilities, equipment, staff, and support for the day. We sincerely appreciate dedicated volunteers Steve Houghtaling and Steph Tabbah-Brown for cooking the celebratory barbecue.

Lastly, this event would not have been possible without the dedication of the Volunteer Day planning committee. Thank you to Senior Outreach Liaison Deb Engel, Lance Moore, Bruce Moore, Rich Porter, and John Furlong.

This group not only gives their time, but they also bring personal equipment, donate supplies, and show their love for the community in so many ways.

We also thank Stewart’s Shops for donating doughnuts, drinks, and ice cream; Voorheesville Hannaford for donating water and lawn bags; Fred the Butcher for donating burgers and hotdogs; and the New Salem Volunteer Fire Department for providing ice to keep beverages cold for our volunteers.
