KNOX — Katherine Elizabeth Bartley, who had been a teacher and language arts coordinator for the Bethlehem schools, loved being a grandmother.

She died peacefully in her home in Dickinson, Texas on Dec. 10, 2021 after a year-long battle with colon cancer.

She was born in Cobleskill, New York on July 5, 1950  to the late Raymond Haverly and Sophie (née Janssen) Haverly of Knox.

She graduated from Berne-Knox-Westerlo High School, and received her bachelor’s degree in teacher education from Barrington College in Rhode Island, and a master’s degree in reading from Rhode Island College.

Kathy taught first grade for seven years in Warren, Rhode Island. She taught first grade for Bethlehem Central at Clarksville Elementary before becoming a language arts coordinator for the district.

“She was not able to continue her career after a serious car accident in February 2000,” her family wrote in a tribute, “but enjoyed tutoring students in reading and writing.

“After selling the farm in Knox in 2007, she moved to San José, California, and most recently to Dickinson, Texas; it was important to Kathy as she wanted to live close to her children and grandchildren.  

“Kathy loved being a grandmother, reading, planning family gatherings, tutoring, and being by the ocean.”

Katherine Elizabeth Bartley is survived by her husband of 50 years, Steve Bartley; by her son, Neil Bartley; by her daughter, Jill Bartley-Simon and her husband, Jarrod; and by her grandchildren, Eli Bartley, Gwen Bartley, and Sophie Bartley.

She is also survived by her sister, Valley Haverly Rogers; by 16 nieces and nephews; and by several cousins.

Her sister, Margaret “Peggy” Haverly Sevrie, died before her, as did her brother, Ronald Haverly.

Friends and family are invited to an informal gathering to honor Kathy beginning at 2 p.m. on June 18 at the First Baptist Church of Westerlo.
