Carl Walter Walls

Carl Walter Walls

BERNE — “Carl Walter Walls, lovingly sarcastic husband, father, and grandfather; respected brother and uncle; veteran; and chronically disappointed Mets fan, died surrounded by his wife and children on Sunday, May 22, 2022 at the young age of 76 (four in Carl years),” his family wrote in a tribute.

“Born July 30, 1945 to Carl and Arlene, Junior (which he hated being called) was educated in no less than a dozen schools growing up, worked on various relatives’ farms, and undoubtedly got up to no good,” his family wrote. “He went on to study agriculture at State University of New York College of Agriculture and Technology at Cobleskill and then did a four-year stint in the Marines.

“Upon exiting armed service, Carl was hired by New York State as a computer programmer where he claimed to have been one of the few people who did any actual work during his 30 years of employment. Upon retiring, he farmed until he decided he wanted to enjoy retirement.

“During his final two decades, he enjoyed spinning long-winded yarns with The Old Men of the Mountain, snowbirding with his wife at Ramblers Rest in Florida, and teaching his granddaughter how not to play Rummy.”

Carl Walter Walls is survived by his wife, Kathleen Walls; children, Thomas Walls and Katie (née Stepheon) Sheldon; granddaughter, Sidney Sheldon; and brothers and sisters, Austin Gray, Billie Jo Youmans, Connie Watts, Frank Walls, and Jerry Walls.

His son, Kent Walls, died before him, as did his parents, and sister, Nancy Pyer.

A graveside service will be held at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Berne on July 8 at 11 a.m. followed by refreshments at the Berne Reformed Church.
