Science should be our guide on abortion
To the Editor:
Because of the freedom of religion enjoyed by Americans, and because of the diversity of religions practiced by Americans, religious arguments for or against abortion are moot.
It would be as wrong to impose Islam’s abortion related theology on non-Muslims, as it would be to impose Christian churches’ theology on Jews or atheists. We can all agree on the science, however, which is why the science should be our guide on abortion.
Beings in human uteruses tend to be human, genetically. These (genetically human) beings are genetically composed of half the birthing person’s genetic material, and half of the sperm donor’s genetic material.
The (genetically human) being in utero is a different, genetically human, being from the (genetically human) being in whose womb the yet-to-be-born (genetically human) being lives. The science is indisputable.
The being (in the birthing person’s womb) is not genetically a mouse or an avocado: That being is a (genetically human) being.
The (genetically human) being’s brain begins to show electrical brain activity, similar to the electrical activity of the birthing person’s brain, at about six to seven weeks after the fertilization of the birthing person’s ova by the sperm donor ….
Let science guide us, not religion. Leave the choice to the birthing person, much as we leave the choice of whether or not to wear a COVID face mask. And once the birthing person's decision is made, let him or her live with the memory of his or her decision until his or her dying day.
Do not follow the ignorance: Follow the science!
