To the Editor:

I was very enthused to read your editorial in the April 18 edition [“Composting: A call to action,” The Altamont Enterprise, April 16, 2026].

We have been avid composters for at least 25 years. It is so simple — we have a small bucket next to our kitchen sink where we deposit the daily banana peels, coffee grounds, egg shells, and vegetable peels.

We throw them into our compost bin, occasionally add some leaves or grass clippings and voila — the black gold is truly a magical production! We do this year round — even in winter — and our compost bin has never overflowed. Yes, an occasional critter munches on something like a celery stalk but it’s not a problem.

For many of us who live on large lots or acres of land, there is just no excuse not to compost. Your editorial clearly articulates the many benefits of this practice. It is imperative to reduce the waste going into the landfills — composting decreases costs and extends the life of the landfill.

I hope other municipalities will consider finding funds to provide community members with compost bins at low or no cost to encourage this great practice.
