Learn about Guilderland’s historical markers

John Haluska will speak about Guilderland’s 40 or so historic markers during a Zoom meeting of the Guilderland Historical Society at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 17. The most recent reposting of a historic marker denotes the location of the former Case Homestead along Route 20. Tyler Rapp of the Guilderland Highway Department welded the pieces back together after it was struck by a car. “Thank you to the Guilderland Water Department for pinpointing the water and sewer lines as well as to National Grid for pinpointing the natural gas lines,” said Haluska. “It takes a team to keep these markers going.”

To the Editor:
On  Thursday, Feb. 17, at 7:30 p.m., the Guilderland Historical Society will hold a public meeting via Zoom featuring a presentation by John Haluska on the many historic markers in Guilderland.

Mr. Haluska will talk about how and why these markers came about, the sources of information on the individual markers, and possibilities for future additions to the 40 or so markers we already have. Also featured will be information on the William F. Pomeroy Foundation ,which provides funding to purchase additional markers commemorating  people or events in our community.

Although it’s nice to have these reminders of our past, many people in Guilderland and Altamont who drive or walk by them daily may not know the backstory behind each one. Mr. Haluska’s presentation is indebted in large part to Alice Begley’s research on the historic markers, published in a 1994 booklet.

Shown here is the most recent reposting of the marker for the former Case Homestead, which was resurrected from the dead by Tyler Rapp of the Guilderland Highway Department. Mr. Rapp welded the pieces back together after it was struck by a car. Haluska will credit the Guilderland Water Department and the National Grid for cooperating in the reinstallation of this sign.
