ALTAMONT — Harold “Hal” Grant, a longtime resident of Altamont, was a World War II veteran and the glue of his family. He died on Monday, Jan. 24, 2022, at the age of 95.

Son of the late Chester and Evelyn DuMond-Grant, he was the beloved husband of Beryl N. Grant.

“Hal enjoyed family times together and raising his daughter and three boys together with Beryl on Helderberg Avenue and later at Leesome Lane in Altamont,” his family wrote in a tribute.

He enjoyed a long career with DuBois Chemicals as a sales district manager and projects around home. He served in the United States Army Air Force in Okinawa during World War II.

“The family camp in Newcomb in the Adirondacks has been a family treasure since the 1960s and his chair on the porch will hold many fond memories,” his family wrote.

He kept active with many groups in the area: St. John’s Lutheran Church, St. Andrews Society, Altamont Caregivers, Altamont Fire Department, Old Songs, and the Scottish Games.

“When he was in his early twenties, he rode his Harley motorcycle as part of a polo team with his father, Chet,” his family wrote. “He enjoyed hunting and the outdoors especially in the Adirondacks and traveling with Beryl and family.

“Hal was the glue of the family who kept us all abreast of family news. Together, Hal and Beryl created a great influence and loving, cherished relationships with their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren that will last long into the future of our family.”

In addition to his wife, Beryl N. Grant, Harold Grant is survived by his children, Kathryn Davis and her husband, Robert; Lawrence Grant and his wife, Sandy; Richard Grant, who was married to the late Patty Grant; and Bradley Grant and his wife, Jana.

He is also survived by his grandchildren, Matthew and Michael Phelps, Dennis Grant, Jessica Philips, Scott Grant, Rick Grant, Mark Grant, Heather Smith, Allison O’Connor, Brianna Grant, Natalie Grant; by 14 great-grandchildren; and by a great-great-grandchild.

His great-grandson, Cody Phillips, died before him.

Services will be held at a later date at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Altamont.
