NEW SALEM — Edwin Wood of New Salem was a World War II veteran who worked as a millman and was always willing to help others.

 A loving father and adoring grandfather and great-grandfather, he “went to be with the Lord” on the afternoon of Sunday, Nov. 7, 2021, his family wrote in a tribute. He was 93.

He and his wife, Lois, were married in the New Salem Reformed Church in a double ceremony with her sister, Lillian, and husband, the late John Duffus. The Woods celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this past June.

After Mr. Wood was born in Asheville, North Carolina, his family moved to Glenmont where he grew up. He joined the United States Navy and served in the Pacific at the end of World War II on a heavy cruiser.

Upon return to the Albany area, he began an apprenticeship at the Delmar Box Company as a millman building wooden shipping containers and pallets by hand. Over the many decades in the business, he moved with the company to Railroad Avenue where he became shop foreman and then on to Troy.

“During his semi-retirement years,” his family wrote, “he continued to assist family, friends and neighbors on their various construction projects in the surrounding area.

“He enjoyed working around the house in his vegetable garden and mowing the family’s lawns. He was always ready and willing to lend a hand to any and all who needed it. He was a member of the Hilltown Senior Citizens and enjoyed numerous trips around the Northeast.

“Edwin liked to socialize and enjoyed talking with everyone he met along the way, starting up conversations with complete strangers. All were touched by his warm and welcoming spirit.

“One of his favorite closing comments was, ‘Every day is what you make of it — with the help of the good Lord’ as he pointed up.”

Edwin Wood is survived by his wife, Lois; by his children, Jonathan Linden and his wife, Kathy, Edwin Timothy and his wife, Terry, and Loren David and his wife, JoAnn; by 12 grandchildren; and by four great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Lillian Duffus and Diane Stedman; his brother-in-law, Lester Sharp; and by several nieces and nephews.

His sister Francis Selip died before him.

Services will be at New Comer at 343 New Karner Road in Colonie on Saturday, Nov. 27, from 2 to 5 p.m. A celebration of his life will be held at a future date in the spring of 2022.
