Celebrate Halloween safely
To the Editor:
I and the members of the Altamont Police Department would like remind residents that there are no specific COVID-related restrictions regarding trick-or-treating this year, but would like to use this opportunity to urge families partaking in Halloween traditions to consider precautions against both COVID-19 and the more common dangers associated with the holiday.
Picking a costume is one of the most fun parts of the Halloween experience, but costume safety is something that should always be considered. Try to ensure that your costumes are fire-resistant, that they not impede vision or movement and (especially if trick-or-treating after dark) are highly visible.
Common things to help with visibility are reflective tape, and flashlights and/or glow sticks. Also, keep an eye on the weather report and make sure to dress appropriately.
As always, teach your children never to enter a stranger’s home or car. Also, instruct children to only travel in familiar, well-lit areas and to stick with their friends and family.
Tell your children not to eat any candy or treats until they are home and you have a chance to inspect them. Make sure you look both ways and walk, don’t run, when crossing the street.
Children and adults are also reminded to pay attention, to keep their heads up and minimize the use of distracting electronic devices while walking and crossing streets. Drivers are also encouraged to use extra caution and to pay closer attention to pedestrians when driving on the holiday.
Given the continuing health crisis, it is still recommended that trick-or-treaters and families giving out candy wear masks when interacting with others in close quarters. Also, attempt to maintain a distance of six feet, when possible, and to practice good hygiene. This includes washing or sanitizing your hands frequently and refraining from touching your face often.
If your family is still uncomfortable with actively participating in the Halloween traditions, given the ongoing pandemic there are some alternative ways to celebrate the holiday. Some suggestions include staying in for a Halloween movie night, having an outdoor scavenger hunt in your yard, or maybe have a virtual costume contest.
No matter how you decide to celebrate this Halloween, we at the Altamont Police Department would like to wish you all a safe and happy holiday!
