Candidates should state their views on masks at school
To the Editor:
I appreciate the recent debate/forum The Enterprise provided New Scotland candidates for town office.
I wish the conversation had included a question about masks, specifically masks in school. Republican town board candidate Charissa Mayer has been outspoken about her antipathy for masking and vaccine mandates. She frames her arguments around freedom rather than public health and safety — yet none of her campaign materials mention this stance.
Although the town board does not have a hand in school district decisions, I think hearing from candidates on this issue would provide a window into their reasoning, judgment, and true concern for the public good.
If the question were asked and explored, I think responses would clearly favor the Democratic candidates who have a record of making decisions in the public interest with regard to COVID-19 and who have refrained from the polarizing rhetoric we hear from Ms. Mayer.
