Robert Leonard Gould

Robert “Bob” Gould, who spent his career at IBM, was a devoted family man who lived by the lessons he taught his children.

His family recalled a few of the hundreds of messages he not only taught but practiced every day:  “Always use the person’s name when saying hello”; “Always get up and offer your seat to a lady”; and, “Always stand up to shake a hand.”

Mr. Gould died in his San Marcos, California home on Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2014, with his wife and three children by his side. He was 74.

The oldest of three children, Mr. Gould was born on July 8, 1940, in Kingston, New York.

He was raised in the Albany area, where he graduated from Guilderland High School in 1958 and from Union College with an economics degree in 1962.

He married Pamela “Pam” Stagg on Nov. 11, 1967.

Mr. Gould proudly worked his entire career with IBM in multiple locations, including Kingston, Chicago, and, San José. Bob and Pam were blessed with three children and five grandchildren. They raised their children in San José, California. And, after retiring, they moved to San Marcos, California in 2006.

Mr. Gould was a loving husband and caring father. “If he wasn’t coaching his sons’ baseball teams or announcing their football games, he was in the stands cheering, every time,” his family wrote in a tribute. “He never missed a game. He was very supportive of his kids’ academic endeavors and was a reliable volunteer at their schools.

“Bob shared a lot of special time with his family — whether it was on camping trips, going to baseball games, or stacking firewood for the wood stove that he put in the house so we would not need to use the heater. Spending time with his grandchildren brought him so much joy.”

His family concluded, “Bob will be remembered for his love of finance, sports, taking cruises, and, more than anything else, his consideration for others....Through his actions and words, he taught his children to be honest, be respectful, be helpful, be frugal, work hard and live within their means.”
