SLINGERLANDS — Karen Ann Wengert Boyea, of Slingerlands, died unexpectedly on Monday, May 25, 2020, as did her husband of 47 years, Basil A. Boyea, “whom she loved, cherished, and guided through the last years of their lives,” her family wrote in a tribute.

“Together they enjoyed many rounds of golf, and several travels to Alaska, the Bahamas, the western parts of the USA, and winters in Florida,” the tribute said.

Mrs. Boyea was born in Utica to the late Edwin W. Wengert and Viola M. Martell Wengert. She attended St. Agnes grade school and Whitesboro Junior and Senior High School. She was a member of the National Honor Society, Future Teachers of America, Girls’ Athletic Association, concert band, marching band, and orchestra.

She was the recipient of the Whitesboro Teachers’ Association Scholarship, which she applied to her cum laude bachelor’s degree in mathematics at the State University of New York College at Oswego. She completed her master of arts degree at SUNY Albany and received her permanent certification in mathematics 7 to 12.

She taught mathematics at Voorheesville’s Clayton A. Bouton High School for 33 years, sharing her love and appreciation for mathematics with her students and was dedicated to their success. She also served as the mathematics department chairperson for 20 years.

“She was an avid quilter putting much love and many hours into each stitch and gifting them for others to treasure along with the prayer shawls she knitted,” her family wrote. “She belonged to the ‘We Love to Quilt’ Friday group, ‘Q.U.I.L.T. Inc,’ and the ‘Prayer Shawl Ministry.’”

Karen Ann Wengert Boyea is survived by her sister and lifelong friend, Marylou Rondeau, and her husband, Charles; two nephews, Geoffery Rondeau and his wife, Cherie, and Bryan Rondeau and his wife, Paula; four great nieces and nephews, Charleigh Rondeau, Quinten Rondeau, Rosalie Rondeau, and Samuel Rondeau; plus her dear godmother and several cousins.

She also leaves several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren whom she loved as her own and was always there for them.

Memorial donations may be made to a food pantry of your choice. A memorial service will be held on a later date.
