SCHOHARIE COUNTY — Barbara Wolford, a devoted mother who loved farm life, died on Tuesday, July 16, in her Knox Road home in the town of Wright, under the loving care of her son, daughter-in-law, and hospice after a long illness. She was 86.

Mrs. Wolford was born on Feb. 14, 1933 in Schenectady, a daughter of Milton W. and Bertha (née Charette) Brown. She was a 1950 graduate of Schoharie Central School.

After graduation, she went to work at General Electric for one year, then married Herbert H. Wolford on July 28, 1951 and moved to their dairy farm in the town of Knox. She became immersed in farm life, and devoted herself to motherhood.

“She loved her family, driving many miles in support of the farm, and for her kids,” her family wrote in a tribute. “Farm helpers were always well fed and cared for.

“Her home was always open to those in need of help, food, or a place to stay. She loved hospitality, cooking for people, conversation, laughter, table games, traveling, and crocheting.

“In 1969, Barbara came to a personal faith in Jesus Christ while listening to a radio program. She became a devoted follower of Jesus Christ, regularly gathering with fellow believers for worship, prayer, studying scripture, ministry, and fellowship.

“She and her husband operated Breezeway Stock Farm in Knox for many years and she was a founding member of Gallupville Gospel Church. She was married to Herbert H. Wolford from 1951 until his passing in 2000.”

Barbara Wolford is survived by her children, Larry Wolford and his wife, Penny, Jim Wolford and his wife, Colleen, Bruce Wolford and his fiancée, JoAnne White, and Connie Hoffman, and by her sisters, Judy Tygert and Joan Fox.

She is also survived by her grandchildren, Daniel Wolford and his wife, Maria, Beth Hofman and her husband, Rick, Melody Wolford, Casey Likes, Ryan Wolford, Kyle Hoffman and Jess, Stephen Wolford, Amanda Hoffman, Katie Wolford, Tina Hoffman, Ben Wolford, and Molly Wolford; by her six great-grandchildren; and her best friend, Linda Hempstead.

Her husband, Herbert H. Wolford, died before her, in 2000, as did two sons, Martin in 1958 and Paul in 1977; her son-in-law Matthew Hoffman and her sister Betty Fox in 2018.

Calling hours will be held from 10 a.m. to noon followed by a celebration of her life on Monday, July 22, at the Gallupville Gospel Church at 118 Gospel Lane, off  of Route 443, officiated by Rev. Benjamin Levendusky with interment in Knox Cemetery.
