Salvatore R. "Bob" Dinovo

GUILDERLAND — Salvatore R. Dinovo, better known as Bob, a United States Navy veteran and long-time member of the Westmere Fire Department, died on Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2014. He was 78.

Mr. Dinovo was born in Albany, the son of the late August and Rose Sgarlata Dinovo. He lived in Guilderland all of his life.

He served in the United States Navy from 1955 to 1957, aboard the USS Sarsfield, DD-837.

After serving in the Navy, he worked for many years as a food broker with G. A. Cinney, and later, Somers & Somers.

Mr. Dinovo was a member of the Westmere Fire Department for over 50 years, and he served as chief of the department from 1978 to 1981. He also served as a commissioner, from 1994 to 2013.

He was also a charter member of the Guilderland Elks Club, a member of the Tin Can Sailors, and he enjoyed camping and golfing.

Mr. Dinovo is survived by his children, Robert C. Dinovo, Timothy J. Dinovo and his wife, Dawn, Lisa Knightes and her husband, Donald, and Holly Marbaker and her husband, Nicholas; his siblings, Philip DiNovo and his wife, Mary, Antoinette Whitehouse, Camille Micozzi, and August DiNovo and his wife, Vicky; his brother-in-law, Charles Bonitz; his grandchildren, Michelle and Morgan Knightes and Cole and Gwenn Marbaker; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.

His wife, Joan Bonitz Dinovo, died in May of this year.

Funeral services were held in the Hans Funeral Home, on Western Avenue, on Aug. 9. Interment, with the full honors of the Westmere Fire Department, was in Memory Gardens, in Colonie.
