Section of 85A to be closed this weekend

NEW SCOTLAND — A tenth-of-a-mile section of Route 85A in New Scotland will be closed this weekend as the New York State Department of Transportation continues its culvert replacement project.

A culvert is a tunnel carrying a stream or open drain under a road or railroad.

On Route 85A, the culvert being installed will carry a tributary of the Vly Creek under the road.

The closure will be between Badgely Lane and Simmie Lane, and will begin at 6 a.m. on Saturday, and is expected to end on Sunday at 8 p.m.

Detour signs will be posted, which drivers should follow if they do not have an alternate route.

A release from the DOT reminds motorists that fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone. In accordance with the Work Zone Safety Act of 2005, convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual’s driver’s license.
