A symbol of racism, slavery, white supremacy

To the Editor:

There is no question that the Confederate flag represents one of the worst sides of the southern culture during the Civil War. It is a symbol of racism, slavery, white supremacy, and an economic system that could only survive on the backs of unpaid and abused workers. Robert E Lee could have been hanged for treason.

How could the Dunnell family and others who defend the flying of a Confederate flag think they can rewrite history?

“Heritage not hate” spread across the flag does not change the message that the Confederate flag conveys.  I assume that they would justify flying the Nazi flag as long as the “Heritage not Hate” logo appeared written across the swastika.

Get real, go back to school and take another class in American History. This time, pay attention.
