Learning about baking: Amy Driscoll, from King Arthur Flour, teaches fifth-graders at Altamont Elementary School on Wednesday how to bake bread. “make sure you don’t do it at 9 o’clock on Sunday night,” said said, because the process takes three hours. Each Altamont fifth-grader is making two loaves of bread at home — one to share with family and another to donate to the food pantry. Watching in the background is Judy Seery from the Altamont Food Pantry.

Hands-on: Brody Higgins, left, reaches for a scraper as Erin Burby, right, scoops sugar while making bread dough under the watchful eye of Amy Driscoll. The project teaches math and science — as well as generosity, since the kids will donate half the bread they bake to the local food pantry.
