Pedestrian killed crossing Thruway

GUILDERLAND — Mariah M. Surgick, 18, of Schenectady, was killed in the early morning hours of May 13 when she attempted to cross the Thruway on foot and was struck by a tractor-trailer, according to the New York State Police.

Police responded at 3:59 a.m. to a report of a serious motor vehicle accident on I-90 near Exit 25, in Guilderland, according to a release.

Surgick had been traveling west on I-90, with another woman, in a 2003 Nissan Altima. The car was parked on the right shoulder of the westbound lane; according to police, Surgick got out of the car’s passenger side and walked southbound into the roadway,  and was struck by a passing tractor-trailer headed west in the center lane.

Surgick was pronounced dead on the scene by an Albany County Coroner.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was not hurt.

The accident is being reconstructed by the State Police and remains under investigation, the release says. Anyone with information is asked to contact state police at (518) 783-3211.
