There was history and resurgence during the fall sports season for Voorheesville, Berne-Knox-Westerlo, and Guilderland.

History was made when a football game was played at BKW for the first time in half a century. The newly formed Helderberg Valley team — made up of players from Duanesburg and BKW — finished strong this season and had a playoff crossover game at the school. Voorheesville teams for football and girls’ volleyball came back to dominate. The football team — with Dalton Esposito carrying the ball — won the central division title in October and made it all the way to the Class C sectional semifinal where the Blackbirds lost to Mechanicville.

The volleyball team — with Emily Bablin — reclaimed what it had four years ago and dug its way to the Class C sectional final where the Blackbirds fell to Galway in five sets.

Also, the combined team of Guilderland and Voorheesville, known as Guilderville, showed power and grace in the pool by winning its first runner-up plaque since 1989 and sending eight athletes — including Kasey Keaney— to Ithaca College for the state competition.

Guilderland football — with George Marinopoulos passing the ball — had a spectacular season, starting 8-0 and winning the Empire division, a streak that ended too soon in the Class AA sectional semifinal against Shaker once again.

Guilderland’s cross-country team sent three runners to the state competition where the Noah’s, Carey and Tindale, hit the course. Carey finished third but came back and won the Federation race.
