For many women, Mother’s Day is a holiday tinged with grief. For those who have miscarried or who have struggled with infertility, the holiday is a reminder of the children they long for.

JEFFERSON — Joseph W. Merwin, who painted industrial equipment and loved the freedom of the wilderness, died on Monday, May 4, 2015, after a long illness, surrounded by family at his home. He was 68.

New Yorkers may sign up to volunteer at their favorite state park or historic site as part of the fourth annual I Love My Park Day to be held Saturday, May 2. John Boyd Thacher State Park in the Helderbergs is among the parks participating in the event.

What has happened to the leadership of Albany County government that it simply chooses to ignore its own laws and hold the needs of one employee over the needs of others?

Both Voorheesville and Altamont have come up with budgets for fiscal year 2015-16. Both are under the state-set levy limit. The tax rate in Voorheesville remains the same as the previous year while, in Altamont, the rate went up just a fraction of a cent.

A 24-year-old who police say is addicted to heroin has been arrested again recently — in Berne, Schnectady, and Oneonta — on charges including larceny and possession of cocaine. He was caught in Berne, after a foot chase, and is now out on $50,000 bail.

The monarch massacre — the billion butterflies that made the epic flight from the eastern United States to Mexico each fall has fallen to only about 33 million — should served to warn us like the proverbial canary in the coal mine.
