These local students from Loyola University in Maryland were named to the dean’s list for the spring 2020 semester with a grade point average of 3.5 or higher:
 

— Jane Powers of Delmar; and 

— Anne Quinn of Delmar. 
 

The American Red Cross in Eastern New York is seeking 100 new volunteers to be part of its Hurricane Season Readiness Reserve Corps, a new trained group ready to support affected communities in the event of a major disaster in our region and beyond.

Two more states — Alaska and Delaware — meet the metrics to qualify for the travel advisory requiring people traveling from the listed states, all of which have significant community spread, to quarantine for 14 days upon arrival in New York.

ALBANY COUNTY — In September, Cornell Cooperative Extension will offer, via Zoom, three sets of free training sessions for parents, based on the age of their children.

GUILDERLAND — Taylor Dorado, of Guilderland, has joined the women’s soccer coaching staff at Russell Sage College.

As a Guilderland High School student, she had been chosen as the 2015 Section II Class AA Goalkeeper of the Year, as well as a Third Team All-State and Suburban Council pick.

Legislation has been introduced in the State Assembly and State Senate that would require all open meetings in New York State to be livestreamed, recorded, and posted on municipal websites.

Today, Governor Andrew Cuomo called his June 12 executive order — the New York State Police Reform and Reinvention Collaborative — ambitious, and urged addressing the crisis. “Very little has been done. Today I’m sending a letter to 500 jurisdictions in New York State that have a police department and the letter is explaining that it is imperative that we address this urgent crisis,” said Cuomo.

One of the state’s new initiatives is a pilot program — including Albany — to detect the presence of COVID-19 in wastewater, which is designed to set up an early indicator system to forecast the virus spread in communities. “Believe it or not, you can find the presence of COVID-19 in wastewater,” said the governor during a conference call with the press on Friday.

Besides our empathy for indigenous people hurt by megadams, we also have concerns about the lack of scientific support that would make it clear this type of hydropower is good for the environment.
