We are profoundly sad that Fazana Saleem-Ismail has died. But we feel sure she moved others just as she did us and, in that way, her work on earth will carry on.

Constance M. Rue

ALTAMONT — Constance M. Rue was a devoted mother and grandmother who started a new chapter in life a decade ago, volunteering for a variety of village initiatives.

She died unexpectedly at her Altamont home on Sunday, July 5, 2020. She was 61.

A drive-through Fair Food Fest was held at Altamont fairgrounds on Saturday.

GUILDERLAND — It was worth the wait because once the numbers were crunched, counted and confirmed the Bonide Charity Week for Guilderhaven at Gade Farm was Bonide’s highest charitable donation yet.

We have plenty of people to thank, starting with Art Cockett and the Bonide company for their generosity.

Calling Guilderland’s fall reopening plan “a work in progress,” Superintendent Marie Wiles said, “We have not made any decisions on the structure … We’re doing our homework. We’re waiting for key guidance on the amount of distance we have to provide between and among students.”

GUILDERLAND — The Guilderland Farmers’ Market has transitioned from online to in-person sales.

Saturdays in July, August, and September, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., over 40 farm vendors, artists, and crafters are selling their goods at the intersection of routes 155 and 20.

GUILDERLAND — One in 10 people in Guilderland is food insecure, according to a press release from the Guilderland Chamber of Commerce. The suburban town has a population of roughly 36,000.

Asked why Guilderland was eager to change now when earlier administrations had been unwilling, Superintendent Marie Wiles said, “We’re at a watershed moment in our country. George Floyd and what happened to him just woke people up. Great numbers are starting to see there really is systemic racism that we haven’t been really appreciative of.” She also said, “We’ve got the trifecta,” and referenced the coronavirus pandemic, economic uncertainty, and social unrest. “Maybe that’s what it takes to wake us up,” said Wiles.
