Golf kicks off the return of HS sports
School sports competitions returned at last this week — with golf. Guilderland is in the Suburban Council, which is playing both low- and moderate-risk sports this fall. The state considers golf to be a low-risk sport for spreading the coronavirus so it is one of only a few sports in which the Western Athletic Conference — Berne-Knox-Westerlo’s league — and the Colonial Council — Voorheesville’s league — will participate. Other fall sports are being postponed till March.

Determined: The Berne-Knox-Westerlo Bulldogs’ number-one player, Will Boltri, puts some power into his swing off the first tee on Friday afternoon at Cobleskill Golf Club. The Bulldogs finished only six holes due to darkness. Boltri shot a 30 and his team lost to Middleburgh, 8-and-a-half to six-and-a-half.

Griffin led the Dutch with a 43 and Schreivogl a 47 in the 273-to-312 win. Guilderland has both a boys’ and girls’ team.

Powerful hit: Guilderland’s number-two female golfer, Hanna Mitchell, watches her tee shot fly toward the fairway on the first hole. Mitchell led the girls’ team, with a 48, in its victory over Colonie on Tuesday. Mitchell and Megna Naidu were the only two girls to finish due to darkness. After-school sports are later this season since Guilderland High School classes start later due to staggered bus runs to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
