Plug and go: A Tesla is parked next to 20 charging stations located by Dave & Buster’s near Crossgates Mall Road in Guilderland at a kickoff event on Tuesday morning. Tesla Inc., based in Palo Alto, California, makes electric cars and also manufacturers solar panels. Tesla employs over 1,000 New Yorkers, the company said in a release, and is building an electric vehicle charging network that comprises over 20 percent of the state’s goal for 3,000 charging stations by 2018.

“We’re getting ahead of the travelers,” says Will Nicholas, the Northeast Regional Sales Manager for Tesla Motors, at Tuesday’s ribbon-cutting ceremony at Crossgates Mall to officially open the 20 Tesla charging stalls, billed as the largest electric-vehicle charging station in the Northeast. Tesla wants to increase its licensed stores in New York State from five to 20; George Amedore, who was on hand at the event, has sponsored a State Senate bill that would do so.
