Rain didn’t stop Altamont Fire Chief Paul Miller, right, along with other first responders and Altamont residents as they stood to remember the casualties of Sept. 11, 2001 during a brief ceremony at the Altamont firehouse Tuesday.

“Stop and hug a loved one,” says Altamont Reformed Church Pastor Matthew van Maastricht as he speaks during the brief ceremony to pause and reflect on the heroes that fell 17 years ago in New York City; Washington D.C.; and Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

Bowing their heads: Altamont residents who were at the firehouse on Sept. 11 to pay their respects take off their hats and place hands over their hearts as the siren sounds. A few sniffles were heard.

Crisp salutes: In the rain on Tuesday morning, firefighters from Westmere and Guilderland stand next to the Helderberg Legion Riders outside Altamont’s firehouse as an empty chair holds fire gear in remembrance of the firefighters who died 17 years ago. A siren sounded at 8:46 a.m., signaling the first plane striking one of the Twin Towers in New York city on Sept. 11, 2001. Also participating in the annual remembrance were the Altamont, Guilderland Center, and Fort Hunter fire departments along with Altamont and Guilderland police and members of the Altamont Rescue Squad.
