Using a crane, workers carefully lower a trench box into a deep hole across Route 146 from Tawasentha Park in Guilderland on Tuesday morning at 8:45 a.m. The box will keep the hole from collapsing, so that workers can safely enter it. A water main there broke at about 1:30 a.m., creating a hole about two inches long with enough pressure behind it to send a fountain of water up through the ground, 50 or 60 feet into the air above Route 146, said Greg Mahar of the Guilderland Water Department. The break affected about 10 homes along Route 146. Repairs were expected to be completed Monday morning.
