Photos: Birds get Clipped

The run for a title for the Voorheesville Blackbirds ended Saturday afternoon in the Class B sectional semifinal in Johnstown. The Blackbirds lost to Albany Academy, 5 to 0, without one hit. It was a perfect game for the Cadets; the ball never left the infield.

The Blackbirds had rallied last Thursday afternoon against Ichabod Crane in the sixth inning after having no hits in the first five innings — and won 6 to 4.

Waking up the silent bats: Blackbirds’ Connor Hennessy leads off the top of the sixth by ripping a single to left, which led the Voorheesville lineup to draw walks. Dalton Esposito had the big blow for the Blackbirds by hitting the go-ahead two-run double to put the Birds ahead for good. Hennessy went one for three and scored a run; Esposito went one for two with the double and two RBIs.

It was up to the defense to hold onto that lead in the bottom of the seventh. Just missing the tag, Voorheesville catcher Will Gallagher attempts to get the sliding Ichabod Crane player which drew the Riders closer.

Making the defensive play: Blackbirds’ John Moreau moves all the way toward third base to field the grounder and makes a perfect throw to first to get the batter.

Only getting one out: Voorheesville’s second baseman Esposito attempts to throw to first to turn a double play in the bottom of the seventh to end the game but couldn’t; one batter later, ended the game.
