Photos: Winter's Hottest Teams

Showing their power, grace, and determination, the varsity teams from Guilderland, Berne-Knox-Westerlo, and Voorheesville gave it their all during the winter sports season.

For the Bulldogs, the cheer team competed in its first winter cheer sectional championships where Mackenzie Hall, Micayla Sheridan, and Marianna Nagengast jumped and flipped for a fourth-place finish.

Serious baller: The BKW girls’ basketball team including Deanna Yarusso, had a good season, finishing with a record of 18-5, which ended in the Class C sectional semifinal with a loss to state runner-up Mekeel Christian Academy.

The Blackbirds had four teams excel this winter. Joseph Gravino shown here at an earlier meet, swam for Guilderland-Voorheesville at states, finishing 14th in the 50-free with a time of 21.74 and 19th in the 100-free with a time 48.32.

Champs again: Bringing the championship back to Voorheesville in boys’ volleyball, the Blackbirds did just that going 20-0 on the season and winning their second championship in three years. Here, Voorheesville’s high school principal, Laura Schmitz, presents the plaque to the team’s captains — Miles DeFranco, John Moreau, and Braden Racey. The boys’ basketball team made it to the Class B sectional semifinal and finished with a record of 17-5.

The Dutchmen had another strong showing in the winter season. In bowling, Brandon Indovina was part of the team that won the bronze medal at states.

State of determination: The grace of the Dutch gymnasts sent three to compete at states. Here, Rachel Drislane, shown earlier, competed in the all-around portion at states and finished in 16th place with a score of 34.725, Drislane’s sister, Emma, finished 22nd in the vault with a score of 8.475 and Shea Thomson competed in the floor and beam at states and finished 15th with a 9.075 and 29th with 8.050 respectively. Other Dutch standouts were Erin Miceli in cross-country skiing, finishing in 28th in states, and Bella Bruno, competing in the long jump and triple jump, finishing eighth at states.
