Wolanin cannon: A World War I Howitzer belonging to developer Gregory Wolanin sits in front of the Price Chopper at 1706 Western Ave. in Westmere. Wolanin, who has received a building permit to begin construction nearby on his 1700 Western Avenue apartment complex, owns the land on which Price Chopper and the Towne Center plaza sit. Asked if Wolanin, a collector of old military vehicles, is allowed to place the cannon there, Acting Chief Building and Zoning Inspector Jacqueline M. Coons said, “It’s a commercial district, so the prohibition on parking commercial and industrial equipment doesn’t apply. I don’t know if it’s in the state right-of-way; I don’t think it is. So I guess he can park it there, unless someone can find some reason why he can’t.” His Howitzer, Gregory Wolanin told The Enterprise, was made by the French, bought by the United States government, and likely used in World War I. “It’s the 100th anniversary of World War I, and I figured there’s no sense having it hidden away.”
