Excitement in the quarterfinal games led the Berne-Knox-Westerlo girls’ and Voorheesville boys’ basketball teams to heart-wrenching losses in their respective semifinal games on Monday and Tuesday evenings.

The Blackbirds were coming off a thrilling 55-to-54 overtime Class B quarterfinal win last Friday at Shenendehowa High School against Broadalbin-Perth. Putting the Birds ahead, Voorheesville’s Ryan Daly hits the winning foul shot with one second left to put the Blackbirds into a matchup with Mekeel Christian Academy last Monday in the semifinals at Glens Falls Civic Center, where the Blackbirds lost 55 to 51. Daly had 12 points in last Friday’s game and 11 points in the semifinals.

One man wrecking crew: Voorheesville’s P.J. Parker came up large for the Blackbirds in the third quarter in the quarterfinal game. Parker had 21 points in the quarterfinal win and eight in the semifinal loss. The Blackbirds finished the season with a record of 17-5.

Driving hard: Voorheesville’s Sean Nolan leans in towards the hoop last Friday night in the Class B sectional quarterfinal against Broadalbin-Perth at Shenendehowa High School. Nolan had eight points in the 55-to-54 overtime win. On Monday, Nolan had 18 points in the Blackbirds’ loss in the Class B sectional semifinal against Mekeel Christian Academy.

The Berne-Knox-Westerlo girls’ team had a dogfight with Mekeel Christian Academy in the semifinals at Cohoes High School on Tuesday evening. Going strong, Bulldogs’ Monique Britton hits a runner for two of her team-high 13 points in the first half of the Class C sectional semifinal 56-to-40 loss.
