Albany County Executive Daniel McCoy smiles on Monday as he signs an executive order for a 90-day moratorium on the use of biosolid fertilizers on farms in the county while the federal Environmental Protection Agency and the state’s Department of Environmental Conservation continue to update their regulations. The fertilizer, made from processed sewage and used on farms in Berne and New Scotland, risks exposure to pathogens, contaminants, heavy metals, microplastics, and PFAS or “forever chemicals.” Looking on, from left, are New Scotland Supervisor Douglas LaGrange, County Comptroller Susan Rizzo, County Legislature Chairwoman Joanne Cunningham, and Deputy Chairwoman Wanda Willingham.
