Tornado watch: Albany County is among 15 counties in New York, as well as counties in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont, all colored yellow, under a tornado watch from 1:18 to 10 p.m. on Aug. 9. At the same time, the National Weather Service is predicting showers and thunderstorms for Albany County, which could be severe with wind gusts as high as 34 miles per hour. At an event in Montauk on Friday, Governor Kathy Hochul announced resiliency efforts to protect Long Island from extreme storms and said, “We know that the threat of climate change is no longer a threat. We talked about threats for a long time. That is our new normal. That is our reality here in the state of New York.”
