Thomas Lemme, left, talks with fellow Marine Thomas Smith — both survivors of Iwo Jima — at a monthly veterans’ get-together at the Home Front Café in Altamont last Thursday, Jan. 9, which also happened to be Lemme’s 94th birthday. Over a dozen active-duty Marines showed up to help Lemme celebrate. Lemme served from 1944 to 1945 with the 4th Marine Division and fought on Iwo Jima. He was awarded a Purple Heart.
