Cindy Pollard, seated, poses with Altamont Mayor Kerry Dineen on July 2 in front of the newly planted white fringetree (Chionanthus virginicus) in Orsini Park, in the center of Altamont. The deciduous tree can grow as tall as 30 feet and has richly-scented flowers in the spring. Pollard said she had never before heard of a fringetree; they are native to the plains of the southeastern United States, from New Jersey to Florida and west to Texas.
