“Flight Paths” Talk and Book Signing. 2 p.m. A pair of peregrine falcons spent the summer at Thacher Park and a family of bald eagles is frequently seen at Thompson’s Lake. These species were brought back from near extinction and are now thriving because of ground-breaking work done here in New York. Author Darryl McGrath will talk about her book, which recounts the trials and tribulations of people dedicated to the survival of bird species at risk. Books will be available for purchase. Mapping David Vaughan’s New York with Craig Williams, at Mabee Farm Historic Site, 1100 Main St. Rotterdam Junction, NY 12150. 2 p.m. Join us as we uncover the story of Irishman David Vaughan’s life, from his expertise in drafting maps to his reflections of life on the Erie Canal. Vaughan was an Irish immigrant who came to Albany in the late 1840s. He became recognized for his talent drafting maps and plans, as well as his observations of life along the Erie Canal.
Curious about owls? Learn about the owls that live in the Albany Pine Bush and the signs they leave behind. We will start with a short presentation and then dissect owl pellets, a sign that owls are active in the area. Ages 8 and up. 1 to 2 p.m. Pre-registration required. $3/person, $5/family.
