On Dec. 4, New Scotland Senior Citizens held its business meeting at the Wyman Osterhout Community Center in New Salem. Any senior 62 and older in the town of New Scotland is eligible to join us. Please spread the word, we have a lot of fun.
Meeting business
The meeting was called to order by President Barbara Sullivan. A total of 46 members attended, we welcomed 2 new members who joined, Carol Lawlor and Angie Diamond.
The business shared was:
— Thirty-seven members attended our potluck on Nov. 20;
— Ann Carson has 59 people signed up for our Christmas luncheon at the Normanside Country Club on Dec. 18. There will be no meeting at the community center that day. Anyone wishing to bring a grab bag the limit is $5 and please mark male or female:
— Our next meeting will be in 2014 on Wednesday, Jan. 15, it will be a combined business and pot luck luncheon;
— I reminded memberS about the dresses for the Angel of Mercy-Dress a Girl. I also have printed instructions on how they can be made from pillowcases or scrap fabric:
— Reminder of voting for the Voorheesville school budget on Dec. 17, from 2 to 9 p.m. Please make sure you vote; if you need a ride please give me a call 439-9038;
— Barbara Sullivan presented Ken Bailey with a Star medal thanking him for his service and letting him know he will not be forgotten.
— I brought the list of families the New Scotland town hall are helping for Christmas. Groceries, gift cards, and big box cards are needed. Seniors suggested we donate money from a drawing and auction at our luncheon to help; Donna Lee is starting a sign up list for another cruise on April 5, 2014 to Bermuda for seniors in the town of New Scotland. A representative from Empress Travel will be at the potluck lunch on Jan. 15, to give us all the particulars. There will be more information to follow.
Volunteers needed
Please if you can help, I am looking for drivers to volunteer who might be able and willing to drive one of the vans to events all within an hour drive from town hall. Events happen on evenings, weekends as well as during the weekdays, so come be part of the fun.
I am also looking for volunteers to help drive seniors in one of the two cars, to medical appointments, groceries and other assorted places of need. Come to town hall and park your own vehicle, use the town’s vehicle, the town’s insurance and the town’s gas. It is a true volunteer position, if I call and you can’t do it just let me know and I will call someone else, there is no pressure.
Hand knitted items
The items that have been knitted and crocheted and turned into New Scotland town hall are being distributed. This season we have gathered 100’s of hats, dozens of scarves, afghans and an assorted collection of mittens and slippers. If you have any of these items that you are saving for the season please get them into town hall, for any that come in the new year will go out to those in need in the upcoming months.
Our troops still need Warmth for Warrior hats. The hat directions are in my office. Remember some places where our military is serving are getting very cold.

— 2. A covered-dish (bring something to pass) or other meal: On the third Wednesday of every month at 12:30 p.m., you should bring your own place serving (plate, knife, fork, and spoon. and
— 3. Fun and games on the second and fourth Wednesday of every month at 1 p.m.

Are you a senior 62 and older and need a ride for a medical, legal, hair, or friendly visits and more? Call 439-9038 to set it up. Rides are available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The program is run on a donation basis. Consider what the ride is worth to you and donate if you can. Our suggested donation is $5 each way for out of town trips and a couple of dollars each way within town. We will go up to 15 miles from the New Scotland Town Hall.
Yellow Bus
Anyone 62 and older can join us on our adventures. Sheets are available at town hall, the Voorheesville Public Library, or online at www.townofnewscotland.com. Every Tuesday and Thursday we offer an Osteobuster’s class at 10 a.m. at the Wyman Osterhout Community Center. The class is free.
Every first and third Wednesday there is a senior citizens meeting at the community center. There is a potluck at 12:30 p.m. followed by a business meeting at 1 p.m.

We are also trying to help those in need over the holiday season. There are several families in town who could use a gift certificate for groceries, if you are willing we would gladly accept any and all donations at town hall and deliver to those in need. We also have several families both military and not that have small children. We have lists of items here at town hall that would help Santa make this a nice holiday season for these families. If you are interested in helping please call Donna Vogel at 439-9020 or me at 439-9038 and we will give you a list of needed items.

Senior Outreach is looking for more knitters and crocheters, please contact me at 439-9038. I know a lot of yarn went out in the past few months and some bags of knitted and crocheted goods are starting to show up in my office getting ready for the cold weather to come, thank you to those who are helping keep our troops warm and our area shelters supplied with hats, scarves and afghans.
If you are interested in donating your time, left over yarn or need any of the yarn, you are welcome to come to New Scotland town hall and help yourself. I only ask you to donate the majority of the goods produced to someone or some place in need. You are always welcome to bring the items back to New Scotland town hall and they will be distributed to the shelters in this area. Our troops still need “Warmth for Warrior” hats. The directions for the Warrior hat is in my office as well. Some places where our military is serving are getting very cold.

Our Oct. 2 meeting was called to order by President, Barbara Sullivan. Thirty-nine members were in attendance. We now have 106 paid members including 2 new members, Charles and Colette Csiza.
We have a member of our group, Kenneth Bailey who went on the Honor Flight to Washington DC on Oct. 19. Another member, Fran Cox’s brother-in-law Robert, attended also.

Our Nov. 6 meeting was called to order by President Barbara Sullivan. Thirty-eight members attended including 2 new members, Gerry Harbour and Maxine Fendrick.
Ann Carson reported on the Christmas luncheon on Dec. 18, at noon at Normanside Country Club. The cost is $12 for members and $22 for non-members. There will also be a Chinese auction, 50/50 drawing and The Mike Hurley Trio will entertain us.
Ken Bailey thanked everybody for mail he received on the Honor Flight. He had 38 pieces of mail presented to him.
Seniors raised $ 468 on Election Day for Neighbors Helping Neighbors Fund. This is a fund used to help town residents to make it through hard times.
A motion made and passed to send $25 each year to 3 different food pantries in memory of deceased members.
I told everyone about an organization that makes dresses for young girls who are rescued out of slavery. I am looking for volunteers to help make dresses for girls’ ages infant to 10-12 years.

Vice President Mary Miller called the meeting to order. Forty-one members were in attendance plus 7 new members. The new members included: Paul Argeris, Don Booth, John Livingston, Harriet Hennessy, Mary Danko, Linda Ingraham, and Genny Boehlke.
Old Business: The annual picnic was held on Aug. 21, with 63 members attending and 6 volunteers helped set up and cook. Thank You, to the local Girl Scout troop for all the help. George Kendall and Doris Rose provided the entertainment and they did a beautiful job. Fun and good food all around, including a few games of Bocce Ball.
New Business: The program Gadgets & Gismos will be held at the Voorheesville Public Library from noon to 1 p.m., to give an overview of the new electronics available that we as seniors have no idea what the youth of today are talking about.
Refreshments for the Oct. 2, business meeting will be provided by the men of the group spearheaded by Sam Youmans, with the annual tradition of cider and donuts.

On Sept. 14 the group took the train from Saratoga station and rode the train to North Creek and Teddy Roosevelt was on board and stopped at every seat to introduce himself and we all asked questions of him. The gentleman who did this marvelous job is named Joe Wigand and he never once broke character.

On May 1, the New Scotland Senior Citizens held its meeting at the Wyman Osterhout Community Center in New Salem.
Meeting notes

Gail Sacco Librarian at the Voorheesville Public Library is putting a program together for seniors about How To Use the New Technology. Examples of the technology are IPads, IPods, EReaders, DVD players, lap top computers, etc. so we seniors know what the young people are talking about.
Remember the Feura Bush Library has a computer if you want to go there during their business hours.
The residents of St Margaret’s Center sent us a beautiful thank you. The children painted watercolor pictures and put them in a booklet for the donations we sent this spring for the children to enjoy.
There will be an annual shredding Aug. 24, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Swift Road Park.
Mary Miller told everyone about the 2-page article in The Enterprise about one of our members, Sandy Berkman. He was wounded on Iwo Jima but witnessed the raising of the flag. A picture of him in an antique fire truck from the Voorheesville Memorial Day parade was passed around.
Joe Williams took the picture to scan into the seniors section at the Feura Bush Library’s computer, along with another picture of a senior’s group on the winery tour.
Mary mentioned how much fun they had on the winery tour and encouraged people to sign up for the next trip which will be this fall, and encouraged people to sign up for all the other trips available.
A trip was taken to the new improved Dormansville Congregate Meal site and the meals have improved and the portions were better. We are trying them again on Aug. 23.
Refeshments for Sept. 4, business meeting will be provided by Lorraine Allen, Donna Lee and Dolly Berkman.
The New Scotland Seniors' annual picnic will be held this year at the town of New Scotland Swift Road Park on Aug. 21, at noon in place of the potluck at the community center.

Yellow Bus
In our Yellow Buses we had dozens of trips with hundreds of seniors out having fun in the past few months, we wish more of you in the town would join in getting out and socializing, it is good to make new friends.
Anyone 62 and older can join us on our adventures. Sheets are available at town hall, the Voorheesville Public Library, or online at www.townofnewscotland.com. Click on Departments, then Senior Outreach, and scroll down to the Yellow Bus, then click either in PDF or DOC. If you would like to be added to the e-mail list, call 439-9083.
Call Susan Kidder to reserve a seat on the bus for you and a friend. We have 14 seats, so first come, first served. If possible two buses will be used with a minimum of six persons on the bus locally and minimum of 8 for out of town trips.
Come on and join us
Every Tuesday and Thursday we offer an Osteobuster’s class at 10 a.m. at the Wyman Osterhout Community Center. The class is free.
Every first and third Wednesday there is a senior citizens meeting at the community center. There is a potluck at 12:30 p.m. followed by a business meeting at 1 p.m.
For all prepaid events make checks out to the specified venue or Town of New Scotland with event name and date in the memo section.
If you are signed up for a trip and it is no longer listed, it means the trip is full.
You will be called with time and place of pick-up a day or so before an event. If you can’t go, please call 439-9038 and cancel as soon as possible.

Upcoming Yellow Bus trips for seniors are as follows:
— Aug. 19, Tom’s Hot Dogs in Greenville; and a free concert in park at 6:30 p.m. Bring a lawn chair or blanket and bug spray;
— Aug. 20, Cooks Park in Colonie a free concert with the Rymanowski Brothers, Polish music starts at 6:30 p.m.;
— Aug. 21, annual senior picnic in the Swift Road Park at 12:30 p.m. Don’t forget your dish to share and call if you need a ride;
— Aug. 21, Voorheesville Public Library free concert at 6:30 p.m. with the Katsura Band;
— Aug. 22, Bronck Museum in Coxsackie, will leave area at 11 a.m., admission is $5. Lunch at the Port of Call in Catskill, the cost is on the senior;
— Aug. 23, Dormansville lunch of roasted pork with gravy, mashed potatoes, orange juice, California blend vegetables, and strawberry shortcake. A suggested donation of $4;
— Aug. 25, Sun Ravena Senior Center breakfast buffet at 8 a.m. The cost is $8. See signup book for menu;
— Aug. 27, Cook’s Park, Colonie; a free concert Hair of the Dog starts at 6:30 p.m.;
— Aug. 28, Rensselaer Senior Center cold plate: roast beef, macaroni salad, coleslaw, cottage cheese and chocolate pudding with Celebrating the Life of Elvis with Donnie Elvis. Suggested donation is $2.75;
— Aug. 30, Wellington Herb Farm for a Victorian Tea with sandwiches and desserts at 11:30 a.m. Cost is $18, with a limit of 22 people. There will be a stop at the Carrot Barn and maybe Shaw’s;
— Sept. 5, Watervliet Arsenal’s Irons and Guns Museum free tour, lunch first at Watervliet Senior Center with stop at the Schuyler Bakery after tour suggested lunch donation $3;
— Sept. 8, Mac-Haydn Theater for All Shook Up with Elvis. A 2 p.m., matinee with a cost of $25. Checks are to be made out to MacHaydn Theater and into Susan Kidder by Aug. 22; dinner is at the Cracker Barrel;
— Sept. 13, Spectrum Theater any movie between 3:15 and 4 p.m., followed by dinner at the Western Diner;
— Sept. 17, Empire State Aerosciences Museum in Glenville leaving area at 11 a.m., lunch at Glenville Senior Center suggested donation $3.75. Museum tour at 1 p.m., $8 admission due by Sept 4, cash to Susan Kidder or MaryAnn Cook with a stop at Lighthouse Restaurant for coffee and dessert after the tour;
— Sept. 18, Rensselaer Senior Center the menu to be announced, suggested donation of $2.75 with The Spirit of Johnny Cash Live with Harold Ford;
— Sept. 21, Sharon Springs Harvest Festival leaving at 9:30 a.m. and returning between 4 and 5 p.m. Lots of walking, places for lunch on your own with a stop at the spice shop on our way home;
— Sept. 22, Town of New Scotland Historical Society Antique Roadshow. Details to follow;
— Sept. 24, Saratoga Casino Club 55 Day with buffet lunch $4.95 and chances to win grand prize for the day with Club 55 card, depart around 9:30 a.m. and leaving around 3:15 p.m., suggested bus donation of $5 each way, $20 voucher for anyone arriving with the bus;
— Sept. 28, Hudson Valley Garlic Festival in Saugerties from 10 a.m. to 3p.m. Cost is $3 to be paid to Susan Kidder on or before Aug. 21 the cost after that date is $7 for seniors at the gate;
— Oct. 13, Scenic Canal Cruise on the Caldwell Belle (a paddle wheeler) cost $23. Cruise starts at 1:30 p.m. see trip sheet for additional information; and
— Oct. 18, Annual flea market trip with lunch in route, head north to flea markets, second hand shops and junk shops.
On May 1, the New Scotland Senior Citizens held its meeting at the Wyman Osterhout Community Center. Any senior 62 and older in the town of New Scotland is eligible to join us. Please spread the word, we have a lot of fun.
Volunteers needed
I am looking for drivers who are able and willing to drive one of the vans to events all within an hour drive of town hall. A lot of these events happen on evenings and weekends as well as during the weekdays.
Meeting notes
The meeting was called to order by President Barbara Sullivan with 38 members in attendance.
— Old business: 46 members attended the installation luncheon at Maggie’s on Western Ave. with Brother Anthony entertaining us on the accordion. Barbara, Mary, Martha, and Pat were sworn in by Albany County Legislator Herb Reilly.
— New business: The annual picnic will be held this year at the town of New Scotland Swift Road Park, on August 21. The committee for the picnic is Pat and Herb Leichman, Linda Pietropaoli, Barbara Sullivan, and Gwen Libby. More information will follow.
The Dormansville meal site at Hiawatha Grange Hall is up and running again. It was decided that a donation of $50 should be sent to help with their reopening. We wish them well.
I sent pictures of the installation dinner to the New Scotland Historical Society.
A reminder to anyone attending the May 15 meeting that a bus will be available to pick you up. Below are the providers you will be able to speak with.

May 24 will be the last of day of bingo until the fall. Come and enjoy the fun and laughter. Hot dogs will be available if anyone is interested.
The refreshments for the June 5 business meeting will be provided by Ann Carson, Lois Crounse, and Alice Lemieux.
At the May 15 meeting our potluck lunch starts at 12:30 p.m., so bring a dish to pass if you would like to join us for lunch. The meeting starts at 1 p.m., where after lunch, several providers will come and give us valuable information. The community is invited to attend. Elderly Pharmaceutical Insurance Coverage, the NYS drug plan, Albany Senior Services, the Health Insurance Information Counseling and Assistance counselor will be there, this is someone you should meet with once a year after the age of 65 if you are paying for your own health insurance. Also Eddy Visiting Nurse Association, Eddy Lifeline, Armistead Caregiver Services, Eddy Day Break Adult Day Services, and National Grid. These are people who can answer many questions you might have as seniors aging in the community. Please come and bring anyone who might be interested. If you would like to attend and don’t have a ride please call 439-9038 and the Yellow Bus will pick you up.
Join us
Are you 62 years young and living in the town of New Scotland? If so, you are considered a senior and thus entitled to use the senior services. This includes our Yellow Bus, joining the New Scotland Senior Citizens, and attending the meetings held at the Wyman Osterhout Community Center to enjoy the fun and games, food, entertainment, and friendship.
We would like to invite any and all seniors (60-plus is the age for a club member) in the area to join us. We are a good group of seniors and would love to have new members.
There are three types of meetings:
— 1. Business meeting: On the first Wednesday of every month at 1 p.m., most times with entertainment and refreshments, cards, and games to follow;
— 2. A covered-dish (bring something to pass) or other meal: On the third Wednesday of every month at 12:30 p.m., you should bring your own place serving (plate, knife, fork, and spoon,.and
— 3. Fun and games on the second and fourth Wednesday of every month at 1 p.m.
Need a ride
Are you a senior 62 and older an need a ride for a medical, legal, hair, friendly visits or more, call 439-9038 to set it up. Rides are available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The program is run on a donation basis so consider what the ride is worth to you and donate if you can. Our suggested donation is $5 each way for out of town trips and a couple of dollars each way in town. We will go up to 15 miles from New Scotland town hall.

— May 19, Schenectady Green Market Outdoors Food vendors and lunch. The cost is on the senior. We will leave the area around 10 a.m.;
— May 20, Rensselaer Senior Center for Veal Pattie with peppers and onions, noodles, Italian Vegtables, and sherbet. A $2.75 donation is suggested;
— May 21, Saratoga Casino “Club 55 Day” buffet lunch for $4.95 and chances to win a grand prize for the day with your Club 55 card. We will depart around 9:30 a.m. and leave around 3:15 p.m., suggested bus donation is $5 each way, a $20 voucher is available for anyone arriving with the bus;
— May 23, Rensselaer Senior Center Gary Ferris USO show with a lunch of baked chicken with orange glaze, mashed potatoes, green beans, strawberry and pineapple shortcake. $2.75 donation is suggested;
— May 24, Bingo at the community center from noon to 2:30 p.m. the cost is $2. Hot dogs are available before bingo for $1.50;
— May 28, Rensselaer Senior Center for Salisbury steak with gravy, mashed potatoes, butternut squash, and fruited yogurt. $2.75 donation is suggested;
— May 29, Cherry Hill Mansion a behind the scenes restoration tour that lasts 45 minutes. Stair climbing to see entire restoration process is not handicapped accessable. The tour is at 1 p.m., and the is cost $3 for 11 or more if less than 11 the cost is $5;
— May 29, Memorial Concert at Shaker High School. This concert is free with donations accepted. It starts at 7:30 p.m.;
—May 30, Rensselaer Senior Center for the Donny Elvis Tribute for Mother’s Day. The lunch menu is zita with Italian style meat sauce and Parmesan cheese, California blend vegetables, and fresh fruit in season. A $2.75 donation is suggested;
— June 1, Sharon Springs Festival with dozens of vendors, shops, yard sales, food and entertainment. This trip is free and leaves the area at 9:30 a.m.;
— June 3, Dormansville for a menu of shrimp scampi over pasta, apple juice, romaine salad with dressing, and ice cream. A $4 donation is suggested;
— June 7, a matinee movie at the Spectrum from 3 to 4 p.m., followed by dinner at the Western Diner;
— June 18, Saratoga Casino “Club 55 Day” buffet lunch for $4.95 and chances to win a grand prize for the day with your Club 55 card. We will depart around 9:30 a.m. and leave around 3:15 p.m., suggested bus donation is $5 each way, a $20 voucher is available for anyone arriving with the bus; and
— June 23, the Mac-Haydn Theatre to see La Cage Aux Follies. This is a 2 p.m., matinee. The cost is $25. The check should be made out to Mac-Haydn Theatre and given to Susan Kidder no later than June 5, to reserve a seat.
