New Scotland Senior News for Thursday, March 14, 2019

Come join us and bring a friend along. Meet new and old friends and enjoy something new. Bring a friend or tell a friend or make a friend on the bus.  Anyone 62 and older in the town of New Scotland is welcome. The buses belong to you.

To sign up, call Debbie Engel at 439-9038; leave a message and I will call back to confirm. We have 14 seats, to be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.  

If possible, two buses will be used with a minimum of six  people on the bus locally and minimum of eight for out-of-town trips.

Participants must pre-pay for all events with checks made out to the specified venue with the event name and date filled in on the memo line.

When trips become filled, they are no longer listed. Those who signed up will be called with time and place of pick-up a day or so before.

Please note: A new rating system lists a number for some outings:

— 1 is easy with flatter ground and one of two steps, little walking;

— 2 is moderate, with a half-dozen steps required, on and off at several stops; and

— 3 is hard with a lot of steps, a lot of walking, uneven ground.

If you sign up, please note you are responsible for your own equipment; you are welcome to bring an aid or friend with you to assist.  The committee tries to look into each venue to see what is required for mobility and safety, access to buildings, parking, bathrooms, etc. Please be advised of the number to better assess your ability to attend.

Scheduled programs and meetings

The free exercise program that is offered at the community center has changed its name. The Healthy Bones for Life program was written by Janet Hakey-Brusgul, a physical therapist at Sunnyview Outpatient Therapy Services and assistant professor of physical therapy at Sage Colleges.

There are now six trained leaders. They meet at the Wyman Osterhout Community Center in New Salem every Tuesday and Thursday at 10 a.m. Come join them any time you can.

The first and third Wednesday of every month, the New Scotland Seniors meet at the community center at 12:30 p.m. for a potluck lunch followed by a business meeting at 1 p.m.

Every Thursday, there’s a movie at the Voorheesville Public Library. The show starts at 1:30 p.m.

Transportation

The town of New Scotland has two cars to take seniors living in New Scotland only to medical appointments, Mondays through Fridays, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

This program runs with volunteer drivers and money donations from riders. No fee is charged; a donation is suggested of $5 each way for out-of-town trips and a few dollars each way within town. If you don’t have the means, you will never be denied a ride. Amounts are only suggestions.

Please give as much notice as possible so we can schedule and find a volunteer to drive you.  Dialysis and chemotherapy appointments take precedence over all other appointments. This is a curb-to-curb service. The program is run at the discretion of the senior outreach liaison and the program committee.

If schools are closed because of inclement weather, all trips are cancelled. Money for events will be refunded if possible.

— Wednesday, March 20:  Senior Citizens congregate meal (bring a dish to share and a plate and place service) at the Community Center at 12:30 p.m. Stay and play cards and games afterwards;

— Thursday, March  21: South Westerlo Church for lunch with a  suggested donation of $5; leaving area at 11 a.m.;

— Friday, March 22: Garden & Flower Show, admission $11. Lunch on the senior. Leaving the area at 9 a.m.;

—  Friday, March 22:  Bingo at the Community Center noon to  3 p.m. The fee is $2. Hot Dogs before the game, cost is $1.50;

— Saturday, March 23: Berne Pancake Breakfast leaving at  9 a.m. from Hannaford. This is a free will donation;

— Tuesday, March 26: Saratoga Casino “Club 55 Day” buffet lunch $5.95 and chances to win grand prize for the day with Club  55 car. Depart around 9 a.m. and leaving casino around 3:15 p.m.; suggested bus donation $5 each way;

— Wednesday, March 27: Tour the Hyde Art Museum and Historic House free admission to the Permanent Collection, Old Masters, 19th-Century European and American art, and Modern and Contemporary art, Staff selections from the vault, Colorama (Eastman Kodak) with lunch at Cooper’s Cave Imporium with the cost on the senior;

— Thursday, March 28:  Westerlo Church lunch the menu is brisket and mashed potatoes and gravy with a suggested donation of $5. Leaving the area at 11 a.m.;

—  Friday, March 29:  Bingo at the Community Center noon to  3 p.m. The fee is $2. Hot Dogs before the game, cost is $1.50;

— Saturday, March 30: Berne Pancake Breakfast leaving at  9 a.m. from Hannaford. This is a free will donation; and

— Saturday, March 30: Onesquethaw Fire Department Spoon Dinner of lasagna, mac & cheese, baked ziti, casseroles, meatballs & sauce. The cost is on the senior. Leaving the area at 4 p.m.

April

— Saturday, April 6: Ioka Valley Farm Breakfast includes a scenic ride. Leaving Hannaford at 9 a.m.  Order off menu with the cost on the senior;

— Wednesday, April 10: Grapevine Farm in Cobleskill browse and have lunch with the cost on the  senior — wine shop included. Leaving the area at 10 a.m.;

— Thursday, April 11:  Westerlo Church lunch with the menu to be announced with a suggested donation of $5. Leaving the area at 11 a.m.;

— Tuesday, April 16: Movie at the Spectrum Theatre. Any movie from  3:15 to 4 p.m. Dinner out at a restaurant with the cost on the senior;

— Wednesday, April 17: Installation of officers at Maple on the Lake, cost and choice of meal to be announced. Payment due at sign-up through Deb Engel at Town Hall or Larry Walley or Linda Piepropoli at a senior meeting;

— Thursday, April 18: South Westerlo Church for lunch menu to be announced with a  suggested donation of $5; leaving area at 11:15 a.m.;

— Tuesday, April 23: Saratoga Casino “Club 55 Day” buffet lunch $5.95 and chances to win grand prize for the day with Club  55 car. Depart around 9 a.m. and leaving casino around 3:15 p.m.; suggested bus donation $5 each way;

— Wednesday, April 24: Albany History & Art Museum, admission is $6. Lunch at Burger 21 with the cost on the senior. Leaving the area at 9:30 a.m.;

— Thursday, April 25: Westerlo lunch with the menu to be announced with a suggested donation of $5. Leaving the area at 11 a.m.;

—  Friday, April 26:  Bingo at the Community Center noon to  3 p.m. The fee is $2. Hot Dogs before the game, cost is $1.50;

— Saturday, April 27: Berne Pancake Breakfast leaving at  9 a.m. from Hannaford. This is a free will donation; and

— Tuesday, April 30: Arkell Museum, Canajoharie, NY. Leaving the area at 10 a.m. with Larry. Lunch is on the senior with the place to be announced.
