Helderberg Senior Services

Back by popular demand! Helderberg Senior Services, the lunch program for seniors, is once again offering Tai Chi classes beginning Tuesday, October 8. The class is free to those aged 60 and older. (A modest donation may be requested but is never required.) Classes will once again be taught by Eric.

To register for this popular class, call Karen Stark at 518-937-5963. If you wish to stay for lunch after the class, Karen must know 24 hours in advance. Classes will start at 10:30 a.m. and conclude by 11:30 a.m. Participants are urged to arrive by 10:20 a.m. the latest so classes may start on time.

Please note: for the first class on October 8, plan to arrive around 10:10 a.m. to complete the registration paperwork. As this is a new class, new paperwork must be filed.

Lunch Program

Helderberg Senior Services offers a lunch program for seniors. Everyone aged 60 and older is welcome. A choice of meals is offered three days each week – Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays – at the Town of Berne Community & Senior Services Center, 1360 Helderberg Trail in Berne.

You can choose from two or three lunch options. Simply call Karen Stark 24 hours in advance at 518-937-5963 to reserve your lunch choice. 

Upcoming menus:

— Friday, Oct. 4,  Choice A: Mac & cheese, stewed tomatoes, blended fruit juice, whole wheat bread and brownie. Choice B: Egg salad sandwich with lettuce and tomato on a whole wheat bun, butternut squash soup and crackers, and brownie. Choice C: Baked fish, sweet potatoes, stewed tomatoes, blended fruit juice, whole wheat bread and brownie;

—Monday, Oct. 7, Choice A: Chicken Cacciatore over noodles, California-blend vegetables, whole wheat dinner roll and vanilla pudding. Choice B: Baked fish, sweet potatoes, California-blend vegetables, whole wheat dinner roll and vanilla pudding;

— Tuesday, Oct. 8,  Choice A: Knockwurst, cabbage and onion stir-fry, German potato salad, fruit punch, rye bread and applesauce cake. Choice B: Baked fish, cabbage and onion stir-fry, German potato salad, fruit punch, rye bread and applesauce cake; and

— Friday, Oct. 11, Choice A: Grilled Muenster cheese on whole wheat, tomato soup, coleslaw with carrots, apple juice and brownie. Choice B: Baked fish, sweet potatoes, coleslaw with carrots, apple juice and brownie.

Meals are served at noon and doors open at 11 a.m. A $3 donation is suggested, but it is not mandatory. No one is ever refused a meal for lack of a donation. So come join us for a tasty, nutritious lunch and stay for crafts and activities if you wish to participate. It’s healthy and fun to socialize with your peers!

Activities

Some of the activities you can partake in include Mexican Train, card games and puzzles. Bingo is played every third Friday of the month and prizes are given to the winners. 

On Mondays and Tuesdays, many participants are making hats and mittens from a loom to donate to Kenneth’s Army, whose mission is to help children in need. Come and learn how easy and fun it is to make these beautiful, useful creations. On Fridays, enjoy playing Mexican Train following lunch.

County, Veteran Services available

Individuals of any age can receive assistance each Tuesday at the Center from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Eileen Bosworth from Albany County can assist with programs such as SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), HEAP (Home Energy Assistance Program) and other county programs. Mike Green from the Albany County Veterans is available to assist veterans with obtaining hearing aids, glasses and general veteran services.
