Do you have concerns about falling? Are you interested in improving your balance, flexibility and strength? Join us for A Matter of Balance, a fun, interactive workshop designed to manage falls and increase activity levels for individuals aged 60 and over.

This free, eight-week workshop runs on Tuesdays, starting May 12 through June 30 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Helderberg Community and Senior Services Center. Space is limited and registration is required. Call 518-372-5667 to register or for more information.

Helderberg Senior Services offers a lunch program for seniors aged 60 and older. A choice of meals is offered three days each week – Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays – at the Town of Berne Community & Senior Services Center, 1360 Helderberg Trail in Berne. 

Meals are served at noon and doors open at 11 a.m. A $3 donation is suggested. You must call Karen Stark at 518-937-5963 by 10 a.m. the day before you plan on attending. She needs 24-hour advance notice to ensure enough meals are provided for everyone.

Upcoming menus: 

— Friday, Mach. 13, Lasagna roll-ups and dinner salad, or seafood salad sandwich with lettuce and tomato, or baked fish and potatoes;

— Monday, March 16,  Lemon-garlic fish and butternut squash, or baked chicken and butternut squash;

— Tuesday, March 17,  Meatloaf and roasted potatoes, or chef salad, or baked fish and roasted potatoes; and

—  Friday, March 20, (Bingo day) Mac & cheese with stewed tomatoes, egg salad sandwich with butternut squash soup, or baked fish and potatoes.

Services 

Individuals of any age can receive assistance each Tuesday at the Center from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Eileen Bosworth from Albany County can assist with programs such as SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), HEAP (Home Energy Assistance Program) and other county programs. Mike Green from the Albany County Veterans is available to assist veterans with obtaining hearing aids, glasses and general veteran services.

Catholic Charities Senior & Caregivers Support Services is available every second Tuesday of the month from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. to provide assistance to family caregivers during their journey of caring for older adult loved ones living at home. Services and information on respite options, counseling, support groups, next steps and much more are available. Anyone who can’t make it on the scheduled date can call Catholic Charities at 518-372-5667, ext. 204.

Legal assistance

A lawyer from Albany Legal Aid will be at the Town of Berne Community & Senior Services Center every second Monday of the month. Any seniors with questions or concerns that may be addressed by a lawyer must contact Karen Stark at 518-937-5963 to make an appointment. 

Hours are already booked for March and April appointments. Next availability for appointments will occur in May. Appointments must be made in advance; no walk-ins will be accepted.

Tax help

On Friday, March 20, a free tax problem-solving day will be held at the Albany Housing Authority located at 200 South Pearl St. in Albany. Staff from Legal Aid’s Low Income Taxpayer Clinic and representatives from the Taxpayer Advocate Service will be on hand to provide guidance and direction on next steps to resolve your tax issues. They will not complete your income tax forms. They are available to help with tax problems.
