KNOX — Frank A. Pemantel was a man who lived his life to the fullest, doing what he enjoyed, fixing various items and spending the last of his years in the Hilltowns. He died on Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2017. He was 76.

ALTAMONT — Morag Marjorie Stuart Kennedy Stauffer was, her husband said, “a people lover.”

“She was very warm and very outgoing,” said Donald Stauffer.

BERNE – Robert R. Wiedman, a Korean War veteran who was married for 58 years, died on Sunday, Oct. 22, 2017, at his lakeside home. He was 87.

GUILDERLAND — Roger L. Sawyer was an “explosive,” “spectacular” wrestler, but, off the mat, was kind and compassionate to everyone he met, including strangers, his friends and family recalled.

Mr. Sawyer, a bicyclist, was killed in a traffic accident on Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2017. He was 30.

June Brown McNiven

ALTAMONT — June Brown McNiven — who served as a nurse in World War II and was devoted to her family — died on Friday, June 23, 2017, in Ogunquit, Maine, one day shy of her 100th birthday.

BERNE — Fred “Pete” Bassler was an honest and caring man who could be just as comfortable in his cabin in Berne as he was halfway around the world. He died on Saturday, Sept. 30, 2017. He was 83.

“He was wonderful,” said his daughter, Sharon Forman. “He could connect to anyone.”

KNOX — Carl O. Peterson, a dedicated dairy farmer who led other farmers, died peacefully at his Knox home on Thursday, Sept. 28, 2017, surrounded by his beloved family. He was 88.

A humble man, he wanted a small funeral, but people came from all over the Northeast to honor him, said his son-in-law, Jeff Proper.

GUILDERLAND —  John W. Bayly — who served in the Navy during the Vietnam War — died at St. Peter’s Hospice Inn in Albany on Sunday, Oct. 1, 2017. He was 72.

He was born in McAlester, Oklahoma on Oct. 29, 1944, the son of the late Norman and Janet (née Ward) Bayly.

Lawrence T. ‘Larry’ Staubach

GUILDERLAND — Lawrence T. Staubach, who was known to his family and friends as “Larry,” was easy to love, according to his mother, Carly Hillmann. She said he was “just a light.”

Mr. Staubach died unexpectedly on Monday, Oct. 2, in a  single-car accident in Altamont on Bozenkill Road, where he lived. He was 22.
