RENSSELAERVILLE — Many places in distant lands bear the imprint of John “Jack” Robert Long, Jr.

WRIGHT — Rufus I. Varin Jr., who thrived on hard work and had a passion for farming, died on Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2016, at St. Peter’s Hospital after a long illness. He was 58.

“His biggest passion in life was farming,” said his sister, Virgilia Tegiacchi. His second love, she said, was trucking.

BRUNSWICK — George J. Casavant, a teamster who drove all over the Capital Region, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2016, surrounded by his loving family. He was 84.

FEURA BUSH — Marvin Curtis LaGrange died on Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2016, doing what he loved — working at his dairy farm. He was 85.

KNOX — Donna Heath of Knox was a strong and caring woman. She loved the children who rode the school buses she drove, and she made afghans for people in need.

She died unexpectedly on Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2016, at the Gloversville Nursing Home.  She was 72.

ALTAMONT — Mary C. Bosworth looked for the best in everyone and believed the future was safe in the hands of her own children and the students she knew at Guilderland High School where she worked as a library clerk.

She died peacefully on Sunday, Oct. 16, 2016, surrounded by her family. She was 85.

GUILDERLAND — Patricia Belle Miller, described by her family as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, died peacefully on Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2016. She was 92.

“She will be missed dearly by her family,” her family wrote in a tribute.

WESTERLO — Alvin H. Latham, who was active in many facets of his community’s life, died unexpectedly on Sunday, Oct. 9, 2016. He was 83.

GUILDERLAND — Betty Marie Cropsey, a mother of five and grandmother of eight, was a champion speed skater and dedicated church volunteer. She died peacefully on Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2016, with her family at her side. She was 90.

Dr. Clifford H. Casey, Voorheesville, obituary

VOORHEESVILLE — Dr. Clifford H. Casey would often answer the phone by asking, “Hey, what’s busted?”

He liked to fix things — tinkering with broken lawnmowers or chainsaws in his workshop or listening in his office to patients with broken hearts or setting broken arms.

ALBANY — Barbara Hall Scherer, a nurse and disabilities analyst, died on Thursday, Oct. 6, 2016. She was 66.

The daughter of Walter and Patricia Hall, she had four brothers and three sisters. She was married to George Scherer for 33 years, their union ending only with his death in 2006.

GUILDERLAND — Robert Jewett Thomson, a civil engineer and had a passion for sailing, died on Sunday, July 17, 2016. He was 89.

A memorial service will be held for him on Sunday, Oct. 23,  at 2 p.m. at the First Unitarian Universalist Church at 405 Washington Ave. in Albany. All are invited to attend.

 

Marjorie Carol Ogsbury Hilton, who grew up in Altamont and lived most of her life in the village, died on Sept. 20, 2016.

A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held on Oct. 22, 2016 at 1 p.m. in St. John’s Lutheran Church. She served the church for years as the wife of its longtime pastor, James K. Hilton.

Katherine Settle Simmons loved to travel and was never afraid to “just jump in the car and go,” recalled her daughter, Penny McLaughlin.

EAST BERNE — Lance Buchardt was an outgoing person with many friends, said his son, Damon Buchardt. “When I was a kid, my dad would take us to the Altamont Fair. He knew so many people that we’d go 10 feet and stop and talk to someone, and then go another 10 feet and see someone else. You couldn’t get anywhere!” his son recalled.
