St. John’s Lutheran Church at 140 Maple Ave. in Altamont will hold the following services:

During the Lenten season St. John's is using a special series called, "The Parables of Lent."  Each service in this series focuses on a biblical parable that connects to Lenten themes.  

New York State’s Maple Weekend is celebrating its 20th year on March 21 to 22, and March 28 to 29, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. During both weekends, producers from across the state will welcome families to their farms to see firsthand how real maple syrup is made.

NEW SCOTLAND — The Collar Laundry Union of Troy, organized in early 1864 by Kate Mullany, a 19-year-old Irish immigrant, was to become the nation’s first truly all-women labor union.

St. John’s Lutheran Church at 140 Maple Ave. in Altamont will hold Sunday worship services at 8:30 and 11 a.m.

There is no Sunday school this week.

NEW SCOTLAND — The New Scotland Historical Association $1,000 High School Junior Award is intended for a town of New Scotland resident who is a junior in high school planning to go to college and who has a strong interest in some area of history or museum studies or the field of education.

GUILDERLAND — The Board of Fire Commissioners of the Westmere Fire District will meet on Tuesday, March 3, and not Monday, March 9, as originally scheduled.

The Elliott House Thrift Shop on Route 81 in Norton Hill will be open for the 2015 season beginning Wednesday, March 4, weather permitting; the shop will close if the weather is inclement.

GUILDERLAND — Boniface Church at 5148 Western Ave. in Guilderland is observing Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday.

A Shrove Tuesday service and pancake dinner will be held on Feb. 17 at 6 p.m.

An Ash Wednesday Holy Eucharist and Imposition of Ashes will be on Feb. 18 at 7 a.m., 12:05 p.m., and 7 p.m.

The Albany Pine Bush Preserve Commission will be offering programs every day at the Discovery Center for the week of Feb. 16 to 20.

GUILDERLAND — Hamilton Union Presbyterian Church, at 2291 Western Ave., will be providing a series of short informational meetings on topics related to how we can care for our family members and those in our local community who are in need of special help.

RAVENA — The Grace United Methodist Church at 16 Hillcrest Drive in Ravena is having a huge mid-winter book sale, with over 33,000 titles, as well as a mini rummage sale on several dates at the end of February.

Just this past week, the church received a donation of another 1,500 books, due to a business closing.

VOORHEESVILLE — Local artist Elizabeth Zunon will talk about her work as a book illustrator and lead a collage-making event for children at the Voorheesville Public Library on Saturday afternoon.

The Emma Treadwell Thacher Nature Center is looking for artists interested in participating in the 12th Annual Nature Art Exhibit, on display at the center from Saturday, March 7, through Saturday, March 28.
