The University at Albany has named Mark Benson as director of athletics. 

ALTAMONT — The second annual Hilltown Triple Crown race series came to a close last Saturday with the 17th annual Altamont 5K.

“The rain disappeared,” said Phil Carducci, the race director.

Losing most of its experienced skill set to graduation, the current Guilderland football team is making changes. 

The Pre-Fall Classic 5K was held in Voorheesville last Saturday and Lukus Becker, of Berne, crossed the finish line first in a time of 18:47.

Olivia Baumann, 15, of Greenville, was the first female finisher in 10th place overall with a time of 20:45.

Katie Marcella, a 2003 graduate of Guilderland High School, has been named the new women's basketball coach at Monmouth College. She’s the 10th coach in the history of the Division III program.

Sixteen junior women rowers of the Albany Rowing Center (ARC) competed in the 132nd Royal Canadian Henley Regatta in St. Catherine’s, Ontario, Canada, with varsity rower Meghan Gutknecht, of Guilderland, winning the coveted Henley Gold in the women’s Under 19 single with a time of 8:01.421. 

Aaron Cahill is an American citizen, but he also plays lacrosse for Team Ireland.

The town of Knox will have its annual youth soccer program with six Sunday sessions starting on Aug. 24 and ending on Oct. 5. The sessions run from 3 to 4 p.m. each Sunday.

The LaSalle Institute will hold its 21st annual Cadet Open at Albany Country Club (300 Wormer Road, Voorheesville) on Monday, Aug. 25 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The event is open to the public.
