BINGHAMTON – After winning two contests at the Empire State Games last summer, the Adirondack boys’ lacrosse team only expected further improvement.

BINGHAMTON — Each with a tight, blonde bun, Brenda and Kara Goodknight made the rotation of gymnastics’ events at the Empire State Games last week.

BINGHAMTON – “We’re waiting for the gold medal game, and what are my girls doing? They’re playing touch football with no shoes on,” said Adirondack Head Coach Mike DiNova.

BINGHAMTON – Keith Domermuth is an ordinary kid from Westerlo. But there is nothing ordinary about winning a gold medal at the Empire State Games.

BINGHAMTON – Throughout the history of sports, athletes have been known to disregard physical pain for a chance at glory. The thrill of victory is too huge to miss.

BINGHAMTON — With a curved arm and the gentle slope of an extended leg, a gaggle of swans cuts through the pool’s chlorine calm to the eight-count of familiar, practiced songs.

 BINGHAMTON — About 6,000 athletes converged in Binghamton to compete in the 31st Hugh L. Carey Empire State Games.

BINGHAMTON — Repeated with purpose and force for each match and quickly followed by the clash of swords and the grunts of competition is the imperative, “Fence!”

WESTERLO –Scott Hannay and two of his kids are hoping to bring glory to Westerlo this week as they throw javelin at the Empire State Games.

Summers in New York would not be the same without The Hugh L. Carey Empire State Games. The competition will be held in Binghamton this year from July 23 to 27.

BERNE — On a hot and humid July, 19 morning, 111 runners lined up for the 10th annual Fox Creek 5K Road Race in Berne. Two ladies with strollers walked the course.

GUILDERLAND — Sixty years ago, the fields were alive with the sounds of young men playing a boys’ game.

The local diamonds were filled with talented ball players, seeking little more than community and personal pride, not fame and fortune.

GUILDERLAND — The Guilderland Bulldogs battled their way to become champs in the Babe Ruth Central District 14-Year-Old All-Star Tournament.  The team will now move on to the state regional tournament.

 

As the long, cold winter continued until March, things heated up on the basketball court and, in the spring, another championship team bloomed.
