Filling practical requests from children in crisis

To the Editor:

While waiting for my hair appointment at Salon 146 last Thursday, it was hard not to notice piles of bags and large boxes stacked in one corner of the salon. The salon and its staff  had decided to organize a collection for “Things of My Very Own,” a not-for-profit organization in Schenectady that provides crisis intervention services to children impacted by extensive abuse or neglect.

Its goal is to keep children together with non-abusive family members and out of the foster-care system. The salon was able to fulfill the needs and wants of 21 children of various ages. Clients contributed cash and purchased items to help the salon in its goal.

Salon staffers said they were surprised and saddened by how practical many of the children were in their requests. Items requested by the children included winter coats, boots, shampoo, and even warm blankets and a pillow.

It’s not too late to do your part! Go to http://thingsofmyveryown.org/ and either donate online, or call (518) 630-5143.  There is a list of items that can be donated and cash donations will be put to good use.

Altamont can be proud of Salon 146 and the great job the salon and its staff has done to support such a wonderful cause!
