A wanton disregard for the will of the people
To the Editor:
How disappointing to see Altamont Mayor Kerry Dineen and two trustees vote for the rezone on Helderberg Avenue. The comprehensive plan represents a blueprint for future development and it should have been followed.
The overwhelming majority of feedback received by the board at last Wednesday’s meeting expressed opposition to the demolition of 107-109 Helderberg Ave. This gives the appearance of a wanton disregard for the will of the people.
Congestion and safety concerns were cited as the reasons for the need of the Stewart's expansion. No actual evidence of safety incidents was offered, however.
There may be a certain level of congestion in the parking lot at peak hours, but this is self-limiting as customers can choose to bypass the Altamont Stewart’s and find similar shopping options a short distance down the road. The current size of the store is adequate for our small village.
This is not how a democracy is supposed to work.
