To the Editor:

On Dec. 9, The Berne-Knox-Westerlo Basketball Club was surprised by a special donation from Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple. Sheriff Apple shook hands and took photos with 28 young athletes while he passed out warm-up jerseys donated by the Albany County Sheriff’s Office.

This is BKW’s first year running a basketball club, which consists of three teams of boys in grades in fourth through sixth grades. The teams travel around the Capital District challenging other teams, which helps the boys gain the knowledge and experience they will need as they continue playing school sports

John Meacham, a parent in the district and the founder of the club, thought it would be a great idea to keep these young students playing the game over the winter. Starting them at this young age in a sport not only builds skills but team comradery and long-lasting friendships and this brings the parents of the Helderberg community together.

Having Sheriff Apple walk into the gym brought big smiles to the players’ faces’ it was like meeting a  “superhero” in real life one boy said. On behalf of the Berne-Knox-Westerlo Basketball Club, we would like to thank Sheriff Craig Apple and his wonderful team, Chief Deputy Leon Borman and School Resource Officer Deputy Nathaniel Bray for not only surprising but supporting our boys on their basketball journey.
