GUILDERLAND — Joan McGrath, a business teacher at Guilderland High School, was honored last month with a Market Maker Business Award from the School of Business at Ithaca College. The annual awards honor high school teachers and advisers who are committed to mentoring high school students in economics or finance.

At Guilderland High School, McGrath also serves as the career exploration and internship coordinator. She is the co-coordinator for the school’s mock trial team and the coordinator for the Invest in Your Future Club, which she helped create. The program focuses on developing work-based learning skills for a wide variety of students, including those with special needs.

In 2018, she received outstanding educator awards from the YMCA and the Business and Marketing Educators Association of the Capital District. Prior to teaching, McGrath was a vice president within the financial services industry.

McGrath attended an awards dinner and reception at the college on Monday, Nov. 12. While on campus, McGrath met with the Core Trading Consultants, a student-run organization that manages over $50,000 in investments. McGrath also heard from student members of the Equity Portfolio Management II course, which is responsible for managing over $600,000 in equity investments.
