Prisoner Slain at Albany Jail

As a sequel to a “Night in Altamont” which took place on Sunday night, November 15th, when the village was awakened by a man creating a disturbance in the neighborhood of the D. & H. station, comes the story of a quarrel followed by a murderous blow at the Albany County jail on Wednesday morning.
Harry Van Staden, who was sent to county jail by Justice Morton Makely of Altamont, seems to have taken a dislike to a fellow prisoner, had an altercation with him, and later, it is alleged, crushed his head with the iron leg of a cot. The authorities are trying to identify the murdered man, whom they believe to be either Abram or Morris Traube.

When Van Staden was brought before Justice Makely, he gave the name of Victor Rand.

POPULATION OF CO.
SHOWS BIG GROWTH
Albany county has grown five times as fast since 1920, as it did between 1915 and 1920, according to census figures announced by Florence E. Knapp, Secretary of State. The tabulation of the field sheets shows Albany as having a population of 197,138. This means a gain during the last five years of 11,031, as compared with an increase of 2,776 between 1915 and 1920. During these latter years, nine of the ten towns fell in population as well as two of the four villages that existed between 1915 and 1920, as there have been two incorporated since the Federal census of five years ago.

The growth of these last five years has been faster in the villages and rural sections than in the cities, there having been a town growth of 6,113 and a city growth of 4,919. The 1925 census gives Albany 117,820; Cohoes, 23,345, and Watervliet, 16,158.

Comparative figures for the incorporated villages follow:

1920 1925

Altamont 797 915

Colonie – 749

Green Island           4,411           4,510

Menands –           1,449

Ravena           2,093           1,944

Voorheesville        614 696

In view of the fact that the villages of Colonie and Menands were incorporated over a five year period after 1920, figures over a five year period are not possible. At the time Colonie was incorporated, however, in 1921, it was given a population of 504, while Menands was credited with a population of 1,272 when it was incorporated in 1924.

The 1920 and 1925 census figures for the various towns of Albany county are:
Berne 1,371 1,388

Bethlehem 4,430 5,824

Coeymans 4,147 4,559

Colonie           10,196           13,249

Green Island 4,411 4,510

Guilderland 3,117 3,708

Knox   975   942

New Scotland 2,470 2,960

Rensselaerville 1,345 1,381

Westerlo 1,240 1,303
